  10. ABOUT 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  11. ========================
  12. 7.0  PLUS Utilities is a set of Drop Boxes, Control Panels, and other
  13. utilities which make using System 7.0 a whole lot easier and maybe
  14. even a bit more fun.
  15.  
  16. REGISTERING 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  17. =============================
  18. The entire set can be registered for $29.95 U.S. (that’s a whole 5 CENTS
  19. less than $30). As a registered user, you’ll get updates to the software,
  20. documentation, and even new software (as long as I don’t go into debt
  21. passing this stuff around).
  22.  
  23. The entire set will be available on Compuserve at no charge to you
  24. (except on-line charges). 7.0 PLUS Utilities are essentially FreeWare.
  25. But if you download them and like them, please at least consider sending
  26. me whatever you think the ones you use are worth.

  28. There is a total of about 25 utilities in the package. See the specific
  29. information for the purposes and functions of these utilities. This is
  30. NOT a complete list. To give a complete list would take up a lot of space,
  31. and I’m sure you don’t want to spend a lot of time downloading it all.

  42. Why $29.95?
  43. -----------
  44. •  Before you order the software, you should see why I’m asking $29.95
  45.     for the entire package.
  46.  
  47. •  I looked at a scenario. Compressed, each of the twenty-five utilities
  48.     is about 20K. Let’s say a user likes only fifteen of them. Assuming
  49.     that it takes the average user about five minutes to find, decide on,
  50.     and download a utility, it will take him a total of 5 x 15 = 75 minutes
  51.     or 1.25 hours to get all the files. It costs (let’s round down) $12.00 per
  52.     hour on CIS (unless you’re calling over something like Datapac, in which
  53.     case it’s about $24.00). So far, these are costing over $15.00. Now, let’s
  54.     say I have an update to all the files. But you need only nine of the updates.
  55.     That’s another 0.75 hours = $9.00. Now they’re more than $24.00. This user
  56.     decides to send me something for the one that he uses all the time.
  57.     Say $5.00 (I’m being a bit pessimistic).

  59. •  So, ordering from me you’re saving $29.00. Plus you get a couple of disks
  60.     (which I estimate to be about $0.95) and you help me pay for university and
  61.     my ghastly on-line fees with the money you would have given to
  62.     Compuserve.

  64. •  All-in-all, I think it’s a fair deal. If you don’t think so, then download the
  65.     utilities yourself. But still please consider sending me something if you
  66.     use the software.

  68. DROP ROB•BOXES
  69. ===============
  70. The Drop Rob•Box family is a set of utilities (some of which require
  71. System 7.0 to work) which perform many functions.
  72.  
  73. The following is a list of many (but not all) other current members of
  74. the Drop Rob•Box family. More are being added to the family all the
  75. time.
  76.  
  77. The utilities which require System 7.0 or higher are marked with an
  78. asterisk (*).
  79.  
  80. TEXTBREAK
  81. ----------
  82. Write messages and other files to be used on-line or on another type of
  83. computer normally (don’t worry about hitting return at the end of each
  84. line). Then toss your files (or folders/disks containing the files) into
  85. this Drop Box. It determines the best location in the file to insert a CR
  86. and, optionally, a LF, based on your criteria (number of columns, etc.).
  87. Useful for those who communicate on-line and send messages (probably
  88. everybody reading this).
  89.  
  90. TEXTMERGE *
  91. ----------
  92. Join text files into a single file. Very useful for telecommunicators (like
  93. you) who wish to join several text logs or groups of messages into one
  94. file. All directories dragged into this drop box are scanned, so you can
  95. throw in sets of files, folders or even disks, or any combination of the
  96. three, and all contained TEXT files will be processed.
  97.  
  98. OBLITERATE *
  99. -----------
  100. Delete all files and folders you drop in this application, with an optional
  101. shredding facility to make files totally unrecoverable. All directories
  102. dragged into this drop box are scanned, so you can throw in sets of files,
  103. folders or even disks, or any combination of the three. You no longer have
  104. to go through the pain of selecting Empty Trash all the time. Also keeps
  105. a log of files you have obliterated for a user-specified period of time.
  106.  
  107. BLINDFOLD
  108. ----------
  109. Make files and folders visible or invisible in the Finder. Useful for
  110. hiding private files or cleaning up ugly desktop clutter. Files are
  111. modified through an open file dialog, or in Drop Box mode. All
  112. directories dragged into this Drop Box are scanned, so you can throw
  113. in sets of files, folders or even disks, or any combination of the
  114. three. Depending on your preferences you can even show or hide
  115. entire directories of files.
  116.  
  117. LOCKSMITH
  118. ----------
  119. LockSmith allows you to lock or unlock files, folders, and disks quickly
  120. and easily without the trouble of the Finder's Get Info windows. Locked
  121. files and disks cannot be modified until they are unlocked. No locked
  122. item can be renamed or deleted until it is unlocked. When used under
  123. System 7.0 or higher in Drop Box mode, you can modify entire groups of
  124. items.

  126. DEFLATE
  127. --------
  128. Strip all help resources from selected files to save memory and disk space.
  129.  
  130. ROUTER *
  131. -------
  132. Drop files into this program and re-route them to other locations. For
  133. example, drop a text file in and move it to a Text Files folder. Or drop a
  134. Word document into a Word docs folder. Or a folder a disk containing
  135. text files, word files, and pict files, and move them to their own directories
  136. on Router’s disk.

  140. Verify, Split, Splice, the Strip Series (several utilities), Order, Segment,
  141. DeskMessage, etc.

  143. CONTROL PANELS
  144. ===============
  145. Control Panels are small programs which somehow modify your System
  146. or Finder. Although they are Control Panels, these do not have to be
  147. in the Control Panels folder to function properly. All 7.0 PLUS Utilities
  148. Control Panels require System 7.0 or higher.
  149.  
  150. PINK SLIP
  151. ---------
  152. Add a Quit menu item to the Finder for use in those memory-intense
  153. situations. You can also remove it if you don't like it any more.
  154. Does the trick described on p. 266 of Feb/92 MacUser a bit more
  155. elegantly and without requiring you to hone “your ResEdit skills".
  156. Also lets you quit from the Finder without modifying anything.
  157.  
  158. TIDBITS
  159. --------
  160. Modify the rename delay time in the Finder (time before clicking on a
  161. name selects it and lets you change it) and some other Finder preferences.

  163. LINK
  164. ----
  165. Link documents and applications. For example, double-clicking on a generic
  166. text file can open up MS Word.
  167.  
  168. KEYCHAIN

  170. Modify command-key equivalents for many of the Finder’s menus
